Character Counts Committee Report
Chairman: Joe Morris Palmer
It is the opinion of this committee that the school systems of Mitchell County, as well as all other school systems in
Georgia, are in dire need of a program which teaches young people the basic elements personal character. This committee believes that more emphasis on personal responsibility,
accountability and other similar qualities can go a long way in preventing violence on school campuses.
It is essential that our secondary school campuses are restored as secure and productive educational facilities and not as armed
camps surrounded by
security fences, barbed wire, metal detectors and security guards. These devices are physical preventative measures. They do not address the root causes of unrest and potential violence that exist on so many of our campuses. This can only be done through a very targeted program such as the one implemented by the West Point Elementary School.
With this in mind, this committee has contacted Mr. Charles Stripling, the newly appointed Superintendent of Mitchell County
Schools.
This contact was very positive and Dr. Stripling indicated a sincere interest in working with Rotary in receiving the program used by West Point Elementary. This information is in-hand as of this writing and will be handed to and discussed with the Superintendent at his earliest convenience.
