Camilla Rotary Club lends helping hand in Puerto Vallarta

by Sonja Stripling Staff Writer of Camilla Enterprise, July 29, 2009

Camilla Rotary Club joined forces with both the Bainbridge Rotary Club and Puerto Vallarta Rotary Club to make a difference in the education of students in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Bainbridge Rotarian Marlene Free presented an update of the Mexico School Project at the July 23 Camilla Rotary meeting.

Free and her husband Dean, traveled to Puerto Vallarta to experience firsthand how the $26,000 raised for the project helps the local children.

The project bought 20 computers for two middle schools, furniture and over 50 pairs of eyeglasses for needy children.

Free explained that a matching grant made the project possible. The Camilla and Bainbridge Rotaries monies were matched by a grant from Rotary International.

"Matching grants address humanitarian issues. They also address in a given community and it combine different clubs together to work for that cause," Free said.

Free said that Mexican schools are very different from schools in the United States. The students attend in two shifts . A portion of the students go in the morning and the others attend after lunch until about 7 p.m.

Free's grandchildren accompanied her and it was a wonderful learning experience for them. She said that her grandson even reminded her that they needed to pick up some school supplies to hand out to the Mexican kids that needed them.

Free talked about a forthcoming project between the Camilla and Bainbridge Rotary Clubs.

The two clubs will be working on another project in Puerto Vallarta. This project will help supply equipment and supplies to "Pasitos de Luz", (little steps of light.)

Pasido de Luz is basically a day care center for children who are disabled. Many of Pasito de Luz clients require the most basic and complete care. Many children that are serviced by the facility are unable to even feed themselves.

Pasido de Luz is a God send to many families involved with the center. The center allows parents to work and still feel good about who is taking care of their children.

During their trip, the Frees visited Pasitos de Luz spending time with several of the 120 disabled children that attend the free program. Pasitos de Luz receives limited funding and was started in 1999 by a group of mothers with disabled children.

Free said that Pasitos de Luz is a work in progress. Storage space is an issue and there is some need for some continued remodeling.

The project will provide the following for Pasito de Luz: Basic baby-sitting and care, physical hygiene bathing, changing etc., healthy nutrition, physical therapy and general rehabilitation, special education classes, speech therapy, hydro massage, recreational therapy including music, singing, and dancing, art therapy and access to specialists.

The grant will assist in acquiring the proper setting for the disabled children.

Pasitos de Luz is recognized locally and regionally for the quality of its services. It is also recognized locally and regionally for the quality of its services. It is also recognized by both city and state governments for the beneficial impact their services have on the families who need these services.

Free explained how exciting she was to be involved in current and future projects with the Camilla Rotary Club.

Camilla Rotary and Pelham Civitan join forces to help citizen

by Sonja Stripling Staff Writer of Camilla Enterprise

The Camilla Rotary and the Pelham Civitan clubs are no strangers to getting their hands dirty to help others in need.

On Thursday, September 17, these two clubs joined forces to build a wheelchair ramp for a Camilla citizen.

Susan Rackley had earlier come before the clubs requesting that they help one of her employees who had fallen in bad health as a result of a stroke. Her employee, Lena King, needed wheelchair access to her home. Rackley offered to pay for the cost of the materials if the Camilla Rotary Club and The Pelham Civitan Club could donate the labor.

The Pelham Civitan Club has been building ramps for needy family for the last ten years. They build about five or six per year.

The Camilla Rotary Club is new to the ramp building world but they have knowledgeable pros in the members of the Civitan club to guide them through the process.

“The Civitarians are the experts. We are here to learn,” Camilla Rotary President David Sullivan said.

“Most of the time the lumber is donated from someone or even the person requesting the ramp if they have the means. The labor is donated by the Civitarians,” Civitarian Jimmy Woods said.

The Camilla Rotary Club and the Pelham Civitan Club joined together to help someone in need by making it easier for her to function by having a ramp build outside of her door.

The Camilla Rotary Club and Pelham Civitan Club members eager to help included: David Sullivan, Dan Bollinger, Rad Yager, Carl Shiver, Jimmy Woods, Ross NeSmith and Wayne Woods.
